Welcome to our website!

We are people who live and work in Bournemouth and who campaign for historic buildings and Conservation Areas, for high-quality new design and for a healthier environment. We have always been non-political, independent and focussed on the protection and enhancement of Bournemouth’s environment and character.

How do we work?

Our activities are anchored around monthly meetings of the Executive Committee, at which we discuss a wide variety of matters affecting Bournemouth. A large part of our remit is to monitor planning applications and development proposals affecting the built and natural environment and feed our comments back to Council Members and Officers, with whom we maintain an advisory and consultative role. There is always at least one committee member in attendance at meetings of the Council’s Planning Board.

We campaign to protect Bournemouth’s historic environment and character and work closely with a number of other local groups and associations to promote shared interests, such as the Boscombe and Pokesdown Neighbourhood Plan Forum.

One of our key aims is to promote high-quality new design and, where possible, we engage constructively with developers to exchange views about specific proposals, whether in overall schemes or design details.

Find out more about the people behind the Bournemouth Civic Society and read our Campaigning section to see more about our work.

A message from our Chairman

Thanks for visiting our website, I hope you will find much of interest. Whether you are an existing Civic Society member looking to catch up on current campaigns and activities, someone wanting to learn more about what we do with a view to joining us or are contacting us regarding a planning proposal do read on. We always value comments from members current and new so do get in touch. Remember we are all volunteers who devote our spare time to the Society amongst family, work and other commitments so if you share our values and have time to get involved don’t hold back, get in touch.
